A good ad gets more inquiries, and a well kept trailer gets repeat renters. A few things worth doing before you list.

Preparing the trailer

  • Clean it out. A swept deck and an empty interior photograph better and set expectations.
  • Check your tires. Correct PSI, good tread, no cracking or dry rot in the sidewalls. Do not forget the spare.
  • Test the lights. Running lights, brake lights and indicators, on the plug you are advertising.
  • Check the coupler, safety chains and jack. Grease where it needs it.
  • Look at the deck and the ramps. Rotten boards and bent ramps turn into someone else's problem fast.

Photographs

  • Take them in daylight, from a few angles, with the trailer unhitched and level.
  • Show the inside as well as the outside.
  • Photograph anything that is not perfect. An honest picture of a scuff saves an argument at handover.
  • The first photo is your main image — make it the best one. You can change which photo leads at any time.
  • Photos may have an overlay of dimensions, to be super clear on the capacity of the trailer.

Writing the ad

  • Be specific about dimensions, weight capacity, hitch type and electrical connector. Those are the details customers will search on.
  • Say what the trailer is good at. "Fits a compact tractor" is more useful than "large trailer".
  • List any accessories you are happy to include, with a per day price if you charge for them.
  • Set a rate for each day of the week. Weekends are usually busier if you want to price accordingly.
  • In the Policies/Terms section, detail out your terms and conditions. Be brief and to the point. This is a good place to list what forms of payment you are willing to take.

At handover

  • Walk around the trailer with the renter and agree its condition before it leaves.
  • Confirm the renter has adequate insurance. This is your responsibility — Lend A Trailer does not verify or provide insurance of any kind.
  • Make sure their vehicle and hitch actually suit the trailer.
  • Agree collection and return times in writing. There are plenty of AI tools out that can generate a nice agreement between both parties.
